In the recent YouTube Democratic debate, Sen. Joe Biden twice asked the question "When are we going to start telling the truth around here?" He was employing an age-old rhetorical device to gain attention for his position on Iraq, but his effort started me thinking about events much closer to home.

Health Commissioner John Stephen, appointed by Gov. Craig Benson a few years ago, has just announced his resignation. The predictable round of "attaboys" and "well dones" has begun to circulate through the Republican establishment, which hopes the soon-to-be-former commissioner will make a successful race for Congress in 2008. This laudatory process is the Republicans’ equivalent of President Bush’s breathtaking babble after Hurricane Katrina: You’re doing a heck of a job, Brownie!

You’ve done a heck of a job, Johnnie, they would like us to believe.

Scientists may have proven one of Americans’ worst fears: that electronic voting machines can be easily manipulated.

According to several reports, California computer scientists at leading universities were successful at hacking into machines made by Diebold Election Systems, Hart Intercivic and Sequoia Voting Systems. Once they hacked into the systems they were able to change votes.
